ANALYSIS OF THE COMPARATIVE ACHIEVEMENTS BETWEEN
14 MERIDIANS-POINT AND MIXED-POINT INCLUDING
DONG-SHI AND SA-AM ON SACROILIAC JOINT PAIN
ABSTRACT
Sacroiliac Joint Pain(SIJP) generally refers to pain in the sacroiliac joint region that is caused by abnormal motion in the sacroiliac joint, either too much motion or too little motion followed by hormonal changes, pregnancy, lactation, muscle imbalance, trauma (e.g., falling on the buttock), and/or systemic arthritis-diseases involving SI joint-inflammation from Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriasis, Gout, Reactive Arthritis such as Reiter’s Syndrome, and Enteropathic Arthropathies, etc.
The proposed research is to compare the healing effects of treatments between 14 meridians-acupuncture technique and mixed techniques including Dong-Shi and SA-Am on Sacroiliac Joint Pain(SIJP), conducted two-arm randomized-controlled trial of pilot scale.
Accompanied by lower back pain, backache, coxodynia, thigh pain, groin pain and sciatica, patients who are suffering from Sacroiliac Joint Pain(SIJP), will be selected and randomized after finding the results of Provocation SIJ Examination Test including Sacral Glide/Shear Test, Yeoman’s Test, Patrick’s Test, Gaenslen’s Test, and Straight Leg Raise Test to screen out them for excluding minor SIJ-dysfunction. The patients resulting in at least 2 positive responses out of 5 tests will be selected as experimental subjects, and pre-tested with PROM (Passive Range Of Motion) and VAS(Visual Analog Scale), then divided in 2 comparative-experimental subjects. These are randomly divided into two groups by routine of P-odd-number(e.g P1, P3,,,) and P-even-number(e.g P2, P4,,,) to serve treatments followed by 14 meridians-acupuncture point(P-odd-numbers) and mixed acupuncture point(P-even-number) by twice a week for 2 months, and they will be post-tested with VAS(Visual Analog Scale) questionnaire and PROM(Passive Range Of Motion) again after 2months.
The results are showing more significant improvement in the treatment-effects of M_P (Mixed Point) group rather than F_P(14Mereidian Point) group by measurement of VAS [decreased by 6.6154±0.99486 to 2.0769±1.01748 (p=0.113) in F_Pgroup and 6.6769±1.05052 to 0.7692±0.63296(p=0.018) in M_P group]; and the treatment-effects of M_P group are slightly more improved than F_P group by measurement of Flexion andLt-Rotation of Lumbar Spine [increased by 64.2308°±4.93548° to 80.7692°±4.00320° (p=0.012) in F_P group, and 61.5385°±4.27425° to 87.3077°±3.88125° (p=0.001) in M_P group].
